A Cove Fit for a Pirate - Episode 316 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat
Steve and Robin are back aboard Arabella after a long week in Granby.
The plan is to make their way to Rockland, about 80 miles up the coast, to help with the final touches and the launch of the schooner Hindu. It will take a few days to get there, with plenty of potential stops to hit along the way.
Searching through a guidebook for the Maine coast, Robin discovers Damariscove Island located in Boothbay, Maine. It’s known to be a place of wild and desolate beauty filled with rich history-worth a visit, for sure.
It’s crazy to believe, but Arabella celebrates her 1st anniversary on the water. And while she hasn’t ventured too far just yet, she’s been able to explore some beautiful areas close to home.
While Robin and Steve continue to dream of sailing to destinations far away, there’s still plenty of learning to be done in the meantime. Right now, it’s all about being close to family and supporting Steve’s mom.
And for everyone wondering how Akiva’s adapting to life on a boat, he is still learning how to relieve himself on board. More to come on that…

Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

A Walk Across England, Coast to Coast - Episode 311 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat
Переглядів 33 тис.Місяць тому
Steve and Robin recently spent some time hiking across northern England, following Alfred Wainwright’s 190-mile-long trail from coast to coast, through three national parks: the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors. The trail can be walked in either direction, though it is most often hiked from west to east-from St. Bees Head to Robin Hood’s Bay. And that’s exactly what ...

Beautiful location!! After following from just after the trees were cut and loving every video I'm not going anywhere. Bigger adventures will come when they come. I appreciate the little ones too. Peace all.
"Steve pointed the boat out to sea" Why did that get to me?
We’ve stayed in Damariscove many times. What a special place. I’ve heard that in the early 1600’s it was the busiest port in North America.
At he one minute mark you go past Pound Of Tea island. I did all the interior trim work on the house there in 2017.
OK guys, lets try and solve Akiva's lack of cooperation concerning "Deck Dooties," Try this and it might take awhile. I breed and show St. Bernards and all my guys relieve themselves on command. While you're on your potty patrol on shore with him observe him and when he begins his absolutions repeat a command of your choice, (I use Pee and Poop) repeatedly while he's attending to business. Then praise, praise, praise! Good Boy, Good boy and so on. After awhile he'll do his business when you start your chant. It dosn't happen overnight but it works! If nothing else you'll become the voice in the dark yelling "Pee and Poop!!' Can't be all bad.
I recognized South Freeport harbor as you were leaving past Pound of Tea. I spent many summers near by on Bustins Island. I have lots of fond memories of that area.😊
What a beautiful place !
I know it sounds gross, but take the grass mat to a dog park, or a friend that has a dog. Use your imagination here; gather samples of feces and urine, just a tiny bit, and rub it into the mat. Disposable gloves are recommended🤓
Robin, congratulations you have ships guns and are a wonderfull example of a vivacious sturdy girl 😎🌺..🇬🇧🧙🏻♂️ worthy of a Pirate queen. Greetings from the Permo Triassic sandstones of Tolkiens shire. 😉😊
That seaweed looks like "Dulsk", an edible seaweed, eaten in Ireland in times of famine, still savoured by some today. It is also a good source of algernon, an ingredient of toothpaste. Put a bucket of it in a warm bath, sit in it for 20 minutes for relaxed muscles and clean skin. Gross? Never, a very useful natural product.
Have Akiva pee on the mat onshore then when he's done that a few times try it offshore.
Arabella, rocks. Nice episode, quality is always better than quantity.
My heart goes out to you and your family! My father is stage 4 and i know it's not a pleasant feeling having that on your mind all of the time. Stay close to where the heart lives!
Akiva, give him the idea by peeing oon the mat while he watches.
Given how much time most dog-owners spend persuading their youngsters NOT to do it in the home, this is a perplexing challenge with Akiva. I'm sure you'll get there. (And I'm sure you've made that green mat smell right? And has Akiva shown any interest in using the head or the shower? It might seem a strange an unnatural idea, but with his nose, he'll be well aware where YOU do it.)
Hi Steve: you are doing the right thing by staying close to Mom during her fight with cancer. You will not regret spending time with her! We will be with you thru this ordeal and when she is better. Then you can go to far flung places with a clear mind. I too, had a Mom who battled cancer and I never regretted the time spend supporting her thru that ordeal.
Family first. Those moments are precious and fleeting.
I have watched your channel from the lead pour , gone and watched from the first , seen every video . Full credit to you for building a great boat . I work on the sea , fishing …. Please consider putting a solid rail around your boat . The learning curve , the big dog , the aspiration to explore wild places … Honestly I fear to imagine you guys sorting some rigging or flogging sail in any real wind or sea without THE most basic safeguard . Cheers from Tasmania
Life is good at giving you what you need. Glad Steve is listening to it saying, you need to stay close, learn the ropes and get more practice. It will come in handy in the future.
There's good eating in that mooring line.
Geology rocks 🤘
Put the mat right forward
There need to be more pirate republics.
In catchinng up, as stated below, for us expats, seeing THE BEAUTIFUL PARTS OF THE NORTH EAST is far away adventures. Forgot how beautiful my country is...Thanks ever so much and hopes and prayers for your mom...richard rider
Really late; worked in Paris a few day great to be back home and catching up...cheers rr Normandy, Fra.
Sounds crazy but YOU need to put some pee pee on that grass mat in order for your dog to understand that is where to go.
PRO TIP ~ THE NEXT TIME YOU TAKE AKIVA TO SHORE TO DO HIS BUSINESS TAKE A BAG AND COLLECT IT. BRING IT BACK TO THE BOAT AND PLACE IT ON THE TURF MAT FOR SEVERAL HOURS... TAKE HIM BY IT SEVERAL TIMES...LET HIM SMELL HIS FECES ON THAT TURF MAT. AFTER SEVERAL HOURS AND SEVERAL VISITS...REMOVE AND DISPOSE OF IT. THEN FEED HIM WELL & KEEP HIM ON THAT BOAT UNTIL HE USES THE MAT... HE WILL...TRUST ME HE WILL.
I like to use a dock line or two on nasty moorings like that; keep the mess outboard.
Looking great, guys! ⚓️⛵️And the photography is amazing! 👍🤙🖖
Learning to sail on that coastline with the weather, tides and fog will set you up for anywhere in the world the the time for further adventures come. I think Akiva's mat needs another dog to pee on it first.
Can you collect some pee from Akiva next time on shore and put it on the "grass" mat? Then he might see it as a safe place to go. Just a thought.
I have been wondering about what you will be doing about Akiva and the bathroom. If she wont go on the grass thing, have Steve pee on it first. I bet she will then.
Have you thought about using a stabilizing platform for Akiva?
Grab some urine soaked grass ....or dirt....(and a stool sample) from one of Akiva's shore trips....and smear some of each on the turf on board the boat....nothing sends the message any better.
Just wanted to continue to express my feelings about the excellence in the production of these vids. Amazing and unbelievable quality makes these the very best I've seen on UA-cam. Thanks very much.
Has it ever been estimated what that actual cost to build this boat has become?
Steve spent years building this boat now she needs him to be the sailor and man that she needs to stay on top of the water. Do you really think she would let him stray to far from home.
I feel like I have found a kind of family on this channel. As others have stated, this is the journey of a wooden boat, and I am here for the journey. Sending positive thoughts and energy to all of you as you take a little detour to do the right thing.
Having had to train my old dogs that particular new trick, my advice is to pee on the mat yourself. Gross, I know, but it worked.
Absolutely stunning!!! Keep keeping on. Family first.
Beautiful drone footage. Steve might have to soil the artificial turf himself so that Akiva gets a direct example that it's OK to do his business there.
It is interesting to find storied places you can discover while on an adventure. Thanks for sharing.
I'll keep it simple and just say thank you much from NL. So much looking forward to next week's update. Best wishes to your mom Steve
Regarding dog bathroom training, what always worked for us was to fit the most expensive carpet you can afford and turn your back for a moment. Our newest rescue pooch also has a liking for sleeping bags, usually mine.
This is like where I am so lucky to live, on the southwest coast of Ireland. Oh Robin! Covered in seaweed = 'gross'? Not really?
enjoying the videos, fyi no dog's are allowed on that island, don't need to be hassled by the pet police
Simply beautiful!! Your mother is in my thoughts and prayers.
Those distant shores aren't going anywhere and neither are we. Gotta take care of mom.
Living the dream guys, hope to see you on the water one day!
@08:29 To prevent this, it's customary to put your own rope through the loop of the mooring line. If your rope already has a (spliced) loop, that can already be on the samson post so you'll only have to put the loose end through, give it slack, fasten it, and the "gross line" doesn't even have to come aboard. This also is a great way to create a fast bridle. 👴😉😁
